What Is a Grader Board Used For?
A grader board – also called a smudger board or land leveller – is a tractor-pulled implement used to level and condition large areas of ground. It works by cutting high spots and redistributing material to low spots in a single pass, which makes it far faster than conventional land planes for most paddock work.
On Australian farming properties, the McLeod land leveller for sale is commonly used for:
- Paddock levelling for irrigation – create the consistent grade needed for even water distribution across flat or gently sloping country
- Dryland cropping preparation – eliminate ridges and rough ground left by chisels, rippers, and disc implements
- Seedbed finishing – level and firm the surface prior to sowing for better moisture retention and even germination
- Melon hole country – one of the most cost-effective ways to make heavily undulating ground workable for cropping
- Road and track maintenance – grade rural roads and property tracks between seasons
- Post-harvest levelling – tidy up paddock surfaces after heavy machinery trafficking during harvest
For smaller or more precise levelling work on building pads and infrastructure, our
skid steer laser grader is the better tool.
Why Choose a McLeod Grader Board?

Built Bigger Than the Competition
The McLeod grader board comes in sizes up to 42ft (12.8m) – larger than most comparable grader boards for sale in Australia. On big country, that width means more ground covered per pass and less time in the paddock.

20+ Years of Proven Design
This isn't a new product. The McLeod grader board has been on the market and working Australian country for over two decades. The design is refined. The weak points have long since been engineered out.

Standard Parts, Anywhere in Australia
As with everything that comes out of our workshop, the McLeod grader board is built using standard, readily available components. When something eventually needs attention – a cutting edge, a tyre, a pin – you're not waiting on something obscure. That matters when you're three hours from a dealer.
Our
agricultural fabrication has worked this way for over 25 years. We build knowing Australia is a big country, and downtime costs more than the repair.

One Person, Ready to Work
The McLeod grader board is set up for a single operator. It folds and unfolds without needing extra hands on site, and the end-tow configuration means you can move it along public roads without an oversize permit.

Grader Board FAQs
What size grader board do I need?
It depends on your paddock size, your tractor's horsepower, and what you're trying to achieve. As a rough guide, larger boards cover more ground per pass but require more HP to pull effectively. McLeod grader boards come in sizes up to 42ft (12.8m). Call us with your tractor spec and we'll point you in the right direction.
What HP tractor do I need?
Grader boards in the 30–42ft range typically require tractors in the 100–300HP range, depending on conditions and board size. Ground type and the amount of material being moved also factor in. If you're unsure, give us a call with your setup details and we'll confirm what's suitable.
How is a grader board different from a land plane?
A land plane works on a fixed frame and relies on the tractor's movement to average out high and low spots over multiple passes. A grader board is more aggressive – it cuts and carries material in a single pass, which makes it faster and better suited to rougher ground, including melon hole country and post-chisel work. For most broad-scale paddock levelling in Australian conditions, a grader board is the more practical choice.
Is the McLeod grader board legal to tow on public roads?
Yes. The end-tow configuration allows you to transport the board within the towing vehicle's width, so you can move between paddocks or properties without needing oversize permits. Confirm local road rules with your state transport authority if you're unsure about your specific route.
Can you make a custom size?
Possibly. We take on custom fabrication work when standard designs don't suit. If you need a different width or a specific modification, get in touch and we'll tell you what's achievable.
Do you sell grader boards outside NSW?
Yes. We're based in Walgett, NSW, but we ship land levellers for sale Australia-wide. See the delivery table above for estimated timeframes to your state.
What's the lead time on a McLeod grader board?
It depends on current orders. Call us directly on 0427 281 527 and we'll give you a straight answer on where things are at. If timing is critical, let us know and we'll do what we can.
Do you service or repair grader boards you didn't manufacture?
Yes. Our workshop handles repairs and servicing on agricultural machinery we didn't build. If your current land leveller needs work, get in touch and we'll tell you what we can do.
